Microneedling – Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, involves a small, handheld device with tiny micro-needles. It passes over the skin, creating tiny channels, or micro-wounds, on the skin. The micro-wounds trigger the production of new collagen and elastin, including new capillaries to improve blood supply. The creation of these micro-wounds can also allow topical products to penetrate the skin deeper than they normally would. The skin’s ability to utilize the nutrients in the products increases up to 3,000%.

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) – Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is obtained from an individual’s own blood. After a single blood sample is taken, the blood sample is spun in a centrifuge for 15 minutes to separate platelets from the blood. The PRP can be injected into the skin or inserted via microneedling.

PRP is full of growth factors that can help in the repair of tissue. FGF and PDGF, both growth factors found in platelets, promote cell growth, tissue repair, and the production of new collagen. PRP also contains stem cells, which can induce collagen production.

SkinPen is an FDA-cleared microneedling device proven to correct a wide array of skin concerns, from wrinkles to acne scarring. Having undergone numerous clinical trials, SkinPen has raised the bar in the industry for technological excellence. Its specially designed ergonomic handpiece ensures maximum safety and efficiency, preventing cross-contamination through a proprietary BioSheath. Patients can receive this versatile treatment year-round to maintain a youthful, revitalized appearance. The SkinPen firms and rejuvenates the complexion from within by triggering the production of collagen, a protein responsible for the supple, hydrated beauty found in youthful complexions.

ProGen PRP Advantage is an FDA-approved system for preparing and delivering Platelet Rich Plasma, a compound rich with restorative growth factors. PRP can be used to enhance volume, radiance, and fullness in the face or to trigger the regeneration of the hair follicles. Taken from the patient's own blood, PRP comes with virtually no risk of side effects, making almost everyone a candidate. ProGen is among the most effective and cutting-edge PRP treatment options currently on the market, and Sculpt MD is proud to provide this best-in-class skincare solution.

What can I expect from the procedure?

Since your treatment is essentially the combination of two trending facial rejuvenation procedures, we do them together in one sum period. During the microneedling portion of the treatment, the SkinPen will be gently passed over the skin to create the tiny channels on the skin. This will allow the body’s natural response for wound healing to take place, which will produce collagen and elastin. Depending on the size of the area, this can take only 30 minutes.

The second part of the procedure will be the application of the PRP. It will be applied directly to the channels created during the microneedling process to further stimulate the natural healing process and creation of collagen. This will mean an overall enhancement in growth factors. This process can also take about 30 minutes, meaning one treatment will take about 60 minutes on average.

Am I a good candidate?

Microneedling with PRP is a natural and safe procedure performed on all different types of people regardless of their type of skin. It is a great alternative for those who are looking to find a non-surgical procedure that can give them a youthful look and reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and stretch marks.

Microneedling may not be right for you if you have recently gone through radiation skin treatment in the last year or suffered any skin infections in the area of concern. The best way to find out if you’re a candidate is to come to Sculpt MD for a consultation.

What will my recovery be like?

Since microneedling with PRP does not break down the epidermis, that means there is no scarring and no downtime! Your skin may be slightly pink and feel similar to a mild sunburn, but you can return to your normal activities. For most patients, the skin recovers in 24-72 hours. Following the treatment, it is important to stay out of the sun and protect the skin with a high SPF sunscreen since the skin will be sensitive to UV rays.

The body’s collagen production will take about 4-8 weeks, during which time you will continue to see improvements. Additional treatments may be required.

Your treatments will depend on the areas you are trying to fix, how many, and the size of those areas. Microneedling can be repeated from 4 to 6 weeks with at least 3 treatments spaced over a four-week period. Some scar reduction may require 3 to 6 treatments.
